EMERALDS

Green is the color of spring, life, love..and Emeralds.

In ancient times, the color green was the color of Venus, the goddess of beauty and love. Every year we celebrate green as the color of life when springtime comes round again and again. Even today, this color plays a special role in most cultures and religions as a color in the flag or a symbol of their faith. From the time of the pharaohs of Egypt and the Incas and Aztecs of South America, Emeralds have been held in high esteem as a symbol of good luck and well-being. Finding a very fine quality Emerald is quite rare as the color is usually marred by the inclusions that are a signature of this gem.

Fine inclusions do not diminish the value of a lively green Emerald as they are typical for the gemstone and are affectionately called a 'jardin' or garden inside the gem. A closer look at the 'jardin' and it tells us something about the eventful genesis of this unique gem. The sparkle of a mini-crystal or small bubbles of gas are trapped inside as the inclusions 'heal' and crystal continues to grow. This describes the typical three-phase inclusions; cavities filled with fluid, which often also contain a small bubble of gas and some tiny crystals, which helps gemologists identify natural Emerald.

Emeralds are a member of the Beryl family of gems that include Aquamarine and Morganite. Pure Beryl is colorless and, as with most gems, trace elements dictate the color of the gemstone. In the case of the Emerald, it is mainly traces of chromium and vanadium that are responsible for the fascinating color. Seldom are large Emeralds with outstanding color and good clarity found, hence that is why fine Emeralds are so valuable.

Revered and valued since ancient times, you cannot go wrong with a fine quality Emerald. This gem is fairly hard which will protect it from scratching, but it can be brittle so you need to use care when choosing a setting. At Coffin & Trout Fine Jewellers we carefully consider and evaluate every gem that we incorporate into our unique designs so that you can be confident in wearing your C&T jewelry for years to come.
